Initial Consultation

What is an initial consultation?

An initial consultation is a chance for us to get to know each other before beginning therapy. The initial consultation is free of charge, and with no obligation. I offer a 30-minute opportunity for you via video or phone consultation.

Why do you offer an initial consultation?

First of all, I believe that therapy can’t really begin until you have decided that this is the work you want to do, and this is the person you want to do it with. How can you know until you have had a chance to really talk? Secondly, clients who have had an initial consultation approach their first session of therapy with a greater sense of comfort, commitment and readiness. Finally, I want to know that my client and I are a good fit before we make an agreement to work together.

What typically happens in an initial consultation?

When you schedule your initial consultation, you will be invited to fill out an Initial Consultation Questionnaire.  It does not take long, and the process can be helpful for clarifying in your own mind what you want from therapy.  Your answers are confidential.  Filling out the questionnaire helps the therapist focus the conversation to what is most important to you.

During the consultation, you will have an opportunity to talk about what is going on in your life. Together, we will explore what you would like to see change in your life. We might envision together what that change would look like, and how you would feel if that happened.

I’ll share with you my take on how we could get there. Many clients feel a renewed sense of hope on the very first meeting. You may feel, as many do, that you want to start this journey with me. If so, you will be invited to schedule your first appointment.

If you decide this is not for you, there is no obligation. It is always best to know upfront if a client and therapist “click” or not, and there is no better time than during the initial consultation.
